I’m already warming to Wally
AVRAM Grant praised the contribution of new defensive coach Wally Downes after West Ham secured only their second win of the Premier League season at home to Wigan on Saturday.
The Hammers boss revealed Downes, appointed following the departure of assistant manager Zeljko Petrovic, had asked him before the game whether he could bark instructions from the touchline. And after gaining the manager’s approval, Downes could be seen getting animated outside the dugout on numerous occasions.
“He was good,” Grant said of Downes. “He asked me before the game if he could shout and say whatever he wants. He did well. He’s very happy and energetic.
“If (Arsene) Wenger is quiet and they can win, everybody says it’s a good thing, so the main thing is the message needs to be clear. People have different ways of bringing the message.
“Wally has a specific job that he’s committed to. He’s doing it well.”
