A WARRANT has been issued for the arrest of Premiership defender Anton Ferdinand after he failed to show up for a court appearance.
The Sunderland star was due to appear at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court yesterday after being convicted of driving while using a mobile phone.
But the defender never showed.
When Ferdinand – brother of England captain Rio – is traced he could be held in custody in court cells before being brought before magistrates.The £6million player is facing a driving ban as he already had nine points on his licence.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “There has been no arrest at this stage.
“A warrant has been issued and we are aware.”
Ferdinand was caught using his phone in his white Range Rover on July 13 in Newcastle while on his way to Newcastle airport to catch a flight ahead of a pre-season friendly.
