Calamity James to stick with Portsmouth just like he did with us
David James is ready to snub a move to West Brom to stay at Portsmouth after describing the Championship as “real football’.
England goalkeeper James, 39, will be offered the chance to extend his Premier League career by Baggies boss Roberto di Matteo.
But James, who wants guarantees of a first-team place in his farewell season, said: “I refer to the Championship as real football.
“When I was at West Ham we were relegated and things were soon very different.
“We were a Championship side playing Championship sides, and it would not draw as much attention. I went to MK Dons one game and it suddenly became very real.
“The previous year I was playing a relegation six-pointer at Bolton and it would be a massive double-page spread.
“Why’s that the case? People aren’t that interested. So in that sense you are playing a much more realistic and less glamorous game.”
